• A sense of balance is innate. As children we develop a sense of balance in our bodies and observe balance in the world around us.
  • A lack of balance - or imbalance - disturbs us. We carefully avoid dangerously leaning trees, rocks, furniture, and ladders. Even when no physical danger is present, as in a design or painting, we still feel more comfortable with a balanced pattern. We instictively want to straighten a crooked painting or piece of art on a wall.
  • Horizontal balance divides a composition into two equal parts with a left and a right side. Vertical balance divides a composition horizontally.
